  • History of mixture preparation and engine control in gasoline engines
  • Differences between gasoline injection and diesel injection
  • Port fuel injection
  • Sensors and signal conditioning (engine speed, phase, temperatures, engine load, driver request, knock, lambda sensor, ...)
  • Actuators (throttle valve, injectors, fuel tank vent valve, ignition coil, spark plugs)
  • Engine control functions: cylinder charge monitoring, boost pressure control, phase control (camshaft), torque structure, ignition, knock control, lambda control, fuel tank venting, exhaust gas aftertreatment, diagnostics
  • Methods for function development and application of gasoline direct injection (components, functions, application methods)

Competencies / intended learning achievements

1. Lecture:

Students will be able to

  • explain the basics of fuel injection,
  • explain the fundamentals of engine control units.

2. Laboratory demonstration:

Students will be able to apply their theoretical knowledge to a real engine control unit.
