  • Materials and composite materials found in nature (e.g. wood, bones, teeth, armor, spider silk, etc.)
  • Biomimetic principles of material structure, e.g. hierarchical and adaptive structures, multifunctionality, self-organization, self-repair, nanostructuring,
  • Damage tolerance
  • Energy aspects/lightweight construction
  • Friction and wear in biological systems
  • Adhesion systems (e.g. gecko)
  • Manufacture and characterization of biomimetic materials

Competencies / intended learning achievements

The students are able to
  • Assign typical materials from nature and technology to possible applications,
  • Assess possibilities and limits of biomimetics,
  • Recognize and describe the biomimetic active principles of the material structure and functionality,
  • Explain relevant material properties and methods of material production and testing
