  • Durability of (massive) formed components: "load-based concepts".
    • Size effects, surface layer, metallurgical notch (tool division plane)
    • Operating loads - numerical and experimental lifetime evaluation (durability vs. fatigue strength; classification methods; linear damage accumulation; test planning, execution, evaluation; operating load simulation test); example: steering knuckle/connecting rod
  • Lifetime of cold-formed sheet metal structures: "strain-based concepts".
    • Stress-strain behaviour; SN curves (strain-based Wöhler lines); Approximate solutions (Standards) and local size effects; example: shock-absorber dome
    • Numerical lifetime prediction; overview of calculation programs
  • Evaluation of manufacturing-related imperfections of primary formed components
    • Evaluation of shrink holes, pores; surface layer influences; example: Wind turbines, grinding tables
    • Non-destructive testing techniques: radiographic and sonic examination
  • Durability assessment of additively manufactured components (PBF-LB/m)
    • Cyclic structural behaviour; surface and size influences
    • Representative structural elements

Competencies / intended learning achievements

  • Durability and fatigue strength can be distinguished
  • Load and strain-based durability concepts can be described
  • Numerical and experimental lifetime prediction can be carried out
  • Relevant calculation programmes and standards are known (overview)
  • Component-related/manufacturing-related influences can be estimated/described
