Evaluation of grades

The grade of the module examination is also the module grade.


Modern vehicles have to fulfill ever-increasing requirements in respect of noise and vibration behavior. This applies to both passenger cars and commercial vehicles (vans, buses, trucks), whose requirements in recent years have more and more been based on the high passenger car standards. The NVH quality of a vehicle has become an important factor in the purchase decision. Manufacturers are trying to generate a typical and unmistakable "brand sound". In addition, the increasingly stringent legal requirements regarding exterior noise (accelerated pass-by) have to be fulfilled. The aim of the lecture is to provide a wide-ranging and versatile insight into noise and vibration problems in modern vehicles and the resulting challenges and needs for action. At the beginning, the theoretical basics of acoustics are taught in detail; afterwards, various aspects of vehicle acoustics and vibration engineering will be discussed.

Competencies / intended learning achievements

Students will be able to
  • reproduce the fundamentals of acoustics, vibration engineering and measurement technology
  • explain noise and vibration generation mechanisms
  • explain measurements for noise reduction on the complete vehicle
