  • Laser basics: laser safety, basics of optics and electromagnetism, laser technologies, physical basics, optical resonators, operating modes of lasers, laser types
  • Beam guiding and shaping methods, laser-material interactions
  • Laser material processing techniques

Additive manufacturing

  • Development of additive manufacturing technology, characteristics,
  • Physical principles, process chains, classification of additive manufacturing processes
  • Construction and design guidelines, economic and legal aspects, standards
  • Process variants, materials and material properties
  • Technological limits, post-processing and finishing of additively manufactured components, potentials and applications

Competencies / learning objectives

Students will be able to:

  • Describe the physical principles of laser beam generation
  • Explain the setup and individual functions of common laser systems
  • Describe the functionality of important processes in laser material processing and additive manufacturing
  • To characterize the factors influencing the process result parameters of these manufacturing processes
  • To select suitable processes on the basis of the process parameters, the processed materials and component geometries
  • Evaluate processes in terms of their suitability for machining tasks and identify potential for improvement in existing process chains.
