Competencies / intended learning achievements

1. Lecture

Students are able to

  • reflect development trends in manufacturing technology
  • name generally applicable definitions of production and manufacturing as well as the classification of the individual manufacturing processes
  • classify the manufacturing processes and to characterize the influencing variables, effective variables and selection criteria
  • describe various primary forming processes such as casting with lost and permanent molds or powder metallurgy
  • compare different forming processes such as massive forming and sheet metal forming
  • show the connections between the basics of metallurgy through physical and chemical processes
  • characterize cutting processes such as machining with geometrically defined and undefined cutting edges
  • distinguish between process variants and areas of application of laser machining
  • explain the kinematics of the separating manufacturing processes and to analyze the chip formation
  • explain the usefulness of using cooling lubricants in the machining process
  • explain the process variants of additive manufacturing and to compare the application strategies
  • work out the process chain for the manufacture of a complex product based on the manufacture of an automobile

2. Exercise

Students are able to

  • understand, measure and analyze technical surfaces
  • prepare a machine tool investment decision
  • understand various manufacturing processes and explain them using basic geometries with regard to forces, strengths and kinematics
