  • Types of stress on materials - mechanical, thermal, chemical, tribological stress and combinations thereof
  • Representation of the different micro- and macroscopic fracture characteristics in connection with the previous stress - damage patterns
  • Procedure and execution of a systematic damage analysis (VDI Guideline 3822)
  • Materialographic examination and testing methods
  • Illustrative examples of known cases of damage

Competencies / intended learning achievements

Students are able to
  • carry out a systematic damage analysis in the case of technical damage.
  • name the corresponding technical terms
  • determine the cause(s) of failure in a concrete case of damage
  • avoid comparable damage in future constructions.
