Contents

Due to increasing digitalisation, there are exciting opportunities for the development of innovative construction systems in timber construction. The development of architectural concepts requires knowledge of derived timber products, digital design tools and digital manufacturing technology.

Joining technology plays a special role here. Digital manufacturing enables a return to interlocking wood-wood joints widely used in traditional timber construction rather than additional metal connectors. Inspiration for new solutions is often found in traditional, handmade joining techniques. Using knowledge about specific possibilities and limitations of computer-assisted production technology, design scope can be explored (design exploration). Parametric digital models and built prototypes are used for this. At the same time students gain an insight into the current research trends in digital timber construction.

Desired learning outcomes:

Students who successfully complete this module will have,

  • basic knowledge of digital timber construction, digital tools for architectural design, including parametric models, visual programming, programming interfaces CAD/CAM and the basics of production technology CNC/ robotics
