An introduction to mechatronic product development and an overview of computer support for mechanical design will be given at the beginning. The course then focuses on the other engineering disciplines that interact in mechatronic product development. Specifically, the following topics will be covered:
  • The technical organization of a product development process
  • Product Data Management (PDM) and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM)
  • Interfaces and data exchange formats
  • Production planning and control
  • Human factors in product development
  • Sustainable product development

Competencies / intended learning achievements

Students are able to
  • name, characterize and compare methods, IT tools and process flows that belong to the subject area of computer-aided development of technical products
  • recommend IT solutions and methods in the context of virtual product development as essential tools for the respective engineering activities
  • give an outlook on current research in the subject area of virtual product development
