Contents

  • Overview of product development
  • Deepening through three industrially realized examples (polymer, solvent, vitamin)
  • Description of the path from the product idea to the realized production process
  • Presentation of process synthesis in different phases and deepening with examples (miniplant technique and scale-up of Unit-Operations)
  • Explanation of the Verbund of BASF's production and infrastructure facilities at the Ludwigshafen site
  • Presentation of alternatives to the raw material naphtha and discussion of their potential
  • Explanation of the energy network of a site and the pinch method, heat integration within a production plant (evaluation and optimization of the integration into the supply networks).

Competencies / intended learning achievements

The students are able to
  • understand the relationship between product characteristics and product structure, and between product structure and process design
  • discuss structure-property relationship and structure-process relationship
  • describe decision criteria for process selection.
  • explain experimental methods and modeling techniques in the different phases of a process development
  • valuate product and process development in the overall context of a chemical site's production network, also with regard to energy efficiency and a changing raw material base
