  • Classification and comparison of renewable energy with conventional methods, basic concepts, potentials
  • Different types of geothermal energy plants
  • Heat pumps, their optimisation and different forms of heat sources
  • Power plant processes and different heat sources
  • Basics of solar radiation and irradiation on arbitrarily inclined surfaces
  • Heat generation by low-temperature and high-temperature solar thermal energy
  • Structure of low-temperature heat
  • Structure and efficiency of concentrating systems for the use of high-temperature heat

Competencies / intended learning achievements

The students are able to
  • describe the structure of the earth and to name the different components of heat flux
  • list and compare the deposits of geothermal heat and the power plant processes for its utilisation and select the appropriate development method or power plant type
  • develop the heat pump process for a given requirement profile, or analyse a given installation
  • name and compare the heat sources of the heat pumps and to analyse them with regard to their effectiveness
  • calculate the solar irradiation on an arbitrarily inclined surface and thus assess the site for its suitability for solar thermal use
  • reproduce the energy flow and losses of concentrating solar thermal power plants and analyse the efficiency of different concentrating systems.
