Contents
In the lecture/exercise, the fundamentals of dimensioning and designing various machine elements and connections are covered. For this purpose, an introduction to descriptive geometry as well as standards, tolerances and fits is first given and various manufacturing processes are explained. This is followed by a discussion of the basic load cases and material properties required for strength calculations. These fundamentals are then applied to fasteners, form-fit connections, material-fit connections, bolted connections, springs and elastic elements. Other topics covered in this lecture include: Friction, Lubrication, Bearings, Rolling Bearings, Plain Bearings, Couplings and Brakes, Belt, Rope and Chain Drives, Seals.
Competencies / intended learning achievements
1. Lecture
The students are able to
- name machine elements and classify them into functional groups
- understand and explain functional principles of machine elements
- recognize stresses
- reproduce the principle of dimensioning
2. Exercise
Based on given examples, students will be able to
- read simple assembly drawings
- perform basic calculations of machine elements
