Contents

The lecture is divided into different blocks in which the following points are discussed in detail:
  • Bioreactors (selection, power input, mass transfer and balancing)
  • Measurement and control in bioprocesses
  • Up-scaling of bioprocesses (parallelization, optimization by stochastic methods, key figures in bioprocesses, scale transfer rules)
  • Up-stream processing (raw material supply, storage and preparation, SIP, CIP)
  • Materials and machine elements for bioreactors
  • Integrated processes and process development with economic feasibility studies
  • Introduction to modeling and simulation of bioprocesses

By means of concrete process examples, the fields of application of bioprocess engineering are finally illustrated (e.g. production of citric acid, antibiotics).

Competencies / intended learning achievements

The students are able to
  • to name the basic characteristics of a bioreactor
  • select a suitable bioreactor for a process
  • to calculate the economic efficiency of a bioreactor
  • to transfer theoretical knowledge into industrial practice
