Possible Study achievement

  • Verification of study performance: practical laboratory / experimental work
  • Examination number (Study achievement): 10442 ("Bioanalyties Lab")
  • Details of the examination (type, duration, criteria) will be announced at the beginning of the course.
    Passing the entrance colloquium, carrying out all experiments in the laboratory and writing a protocol (weighting 30% colloquium; 70% protocol)

    Depending on the examination regulations, the course work can/must be submitted as graded examination work. In this case the repetition rules of the examination regulations for practical laboratory work apply.


Using the example of a microbial fermentation (e.g. E. coli or S. cerevisiae), different sensor systems are investigated in case of disturbances of the bioprocess:
  • pH and T measurement in the bioreactor
  • Dissolved gas and exhaust gas analysis
  • Cell count determination

In addition, methods for product analysis are used:

  • Determination of the glucose concentration by means of biosensor technology
  • Determination of protein content (staining methods)
  • 2D gel electrophoresis
  • 3D fluorescence spectroscopy
  • Capillary Electrophoresis

Competencies / intended learning achievements

The students are able
  • to apply bioanalytical systems in practice, which have so far only been taught in theory during the course of studies
  • to carry out necessary analyses on bioprocesses independently
  • to evaluate the achieved measurement results in order to derive process control strategies
  • to present and discuss their results in the laboratory group

In-depth knowledge in the execution of fermentations (bacteria and fungi)


Requirements for attendance (formal)

Proof of participation in the safety training according to the German Ordinance on Hazardous Substances, not more than one year ago.
