- Verification of study performance: presentation
Students will be required to complete a poster presentation on modern applications of viruses in the research laboratory. The poster presentation and an examination at the end of the module will serve as the final assessment for this course.
Contents
The aim of this module of 8 double lectures commencing on 25 Nov 2019 is to introduce students to the extremely diverse world of viruses. We will start by looking at the wide variety in viral genome structure and the classification of viruses. Common strategies necessary for successful virus spread within its host population and replication within its host cells will be emphasised. Specific viruses will be used to demonstrate typical virus lifecycles (eg. Pox viruses, African Swine Fever Virus, Maize Streak Virus) with emphasis on genome replication strategies, modes of transmission, and how to interrupt them, as well as highlighting targets for anti-viral treatments. Emerging viruses (such as Ebola and Zika viruses) and their epidemiology will be covered. The coursework will end with a discussion on how virus research has resulted in a better understanding of molecular replication strategies, protein self-assembly mechanisms, epidemiology and molecular evolution.
